What We Do
What We Do
About Our Centre
The Heathrow Special Needs Centre is committed to enhancing the lives of individuals of all ages with disabilities and special needs. Our facility serves as a nurturing ground for those with conditions such as multiple and profound learning disabilities, physical and mental disabilities, and those recovering from serious health conditions like strokes or dementia. We are renowned for our innovative use of animal-assisted activities, which have been shown to significantly enhance the mental and physical health of our visitors.
Our centre provides a variety of activities, including interaction with various farm animals and horticultural therapy. These activities are intentionally designed to deliver therapeutic and educational benefits, creating a thriving environment supported by a community setting. Our emphasis on community involvement is evident through the continuous support and contributions from local groups and charities.
Operating under charity number 1155421, we sustain our activities through donations and the help of dedicated volunteers, ensuring all resources directly benefit the health and well-being of our visitors.
Our Activities and Their Impact
At Heathrow Special Needs Centre, we offer a wide range of animal and farm-related activities at no charge to individuals with disabilities such as Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, and many more. Our visitors span those with profound and multiple disabilities, various physical and mental challenges, those in recovery from severe medical issues, and young offenders seeking positive changes in their lives.
How Our Programs Work:
-
Non-weight bearing activities: These are especially beneficial for individuals with cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders, helping them become more relaxed and supple. This aids in strengthening core stability, reducing spasms, and improving balance, posture, and coordination.
-
Varied session content: We design our activities to accommodate needs associated with autism spectrum disorders, developmental delays, Down’s syndrome, and learning or language disabilities. The repetition of challenges not only provides recreational benefits but also significant psychological advantages. Making decisions during activities enhances visitors’ communication skills.
-
Personal achievement: We encourage our visitors to cultivate a sense of personal achievement—a benefit often elusive elsewhere. This fosters well-being and boosts self-confidence. Additionally, individuals with congenital disabilities experience new freedom in movement, and those with progressive diseases can maintain mobility and remain active longer.
